Chronicles of Philanthropy: How to Secure General Operating Support Amid Tight Competition - $79
Thu, Apr 23, 2026 1:00 PM CDT
Organized by COP Zoom
$69.00 - $89.00
In times of tighter budgets, economic uncertainty, and growing needs for services, nonprofits urgently need the security that general operating support provides. More than 75 percent of charities saw higher demand for their programs during the past year, but fewer than half expanded their operating budgets, one study finds.
Yet, as the need for unrestricted funding increases, so does the competition. How can you best position your organization to secure general operating support in 2026 and improve your odds of success?
Join this 75-minute webinar to learn from the head of a foundation that has tripled this form of support in recent years and the top fundraiser at a nonprofit that brings in nearly three-quarters of its fundraising revenue from unrestricted gifts.
They’ll explain key ways to ensure your organization is well-prepared to seek general operating support — and how to frame your request when you’re ready. You’ll also learn how to nurture the type of donor relationships that lead to flexible funding, tell a holistic story about your work to inspire this form of support, and help donors understand your organization’s impact before seeing your application.
Plus, you’ll get insider tips for how to craft a proposal that stands out and instills confidence in grant makers, even if your organization is struggling financially.
You’ll learn how to:
• Build trust with funders to lay the groundwork for general operating support
• Make a strong case for flexible funding in proposals and donor conversations
• Show how investing in your whole organization leads to long-term impact

FORWARD on Attainable Housing: From Ideas to Delivery
Attainable housing doesn’t move forward by talking — it moves forward when people build.
On Wednesday, March 25 (7:30–9:30 AM), Construction Forum convenes a working conversation about what it actually takes to deliver attainable housing today — financially, technologically, and at the neighborhood level
This isn’t theory. It’s practice.
We will gather at First Unitarian Church of St. Louis (5007 Waterman Blvd.) — a historic institution rooted in social justice and located directly in the tornado’s path. The setting underscores the point: attainable housing is not abstract policy. It is a current, local construction challenge tied to recovery, resilience, and long-term neighborhood stability.

About the Presenter
A native St. Louisan, Ravi Rao, JD, developed a passion for social justice during his college years at Washington University. A lifelong debater and coach, Ravi went from captaining the high school team at a well-resourced public school in the county to coaching debate in some of the city’s most under-resourced schools. That profound firsthand exposure to resource disparity remained with Ravi upon his return to St. Louis after completing his legal studies at Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Ravi co-founded and directed the St. Louis Urban Debate League, a non-profit organization that supported the establishment and growth of after-school debate teams in St. Louis’s urban schools. That experience convinced Ravi to pursue a career in nonprofit fundraising, where he combines his advocacy background with his passion for connecting prospective donors with the projects and causes that matter to them.
As a consultant to non-profits, Ravi combines his strengths as a researcher, communicator, and educator, locating the organizational stories that best convey impact to prospective donors while coaching staff and boards to maximize their resource development efforts.
A resident of St. Louis City, Ravi lives with his beautiful wife, Kelli, son Arjuna, and beagle Hype. He can often be found chasing after the latter two in the evenings at Lafayette Square Park, coaching at a local debate tournament, or cheering on his beloved Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues from the nosebleeds. In his spare time, he enjoys all things Star Wars.

The 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐏𝐏𝐀) 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 is asking for your continued help getting the word out to residents who may still need support. The application deadline has been extended to 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟖, giving residents additional time to complete applications and fix missing or incorrect information.
This matters because these FEMA recovery dollars are meant to help residents:
Repair and restore their homes
Clear remaining debris
Address properties that are unsafe or beyond repair
Making sure eligible residents know about the program and have help applying is critical to ensuring recovery funds reach the community.
