The Immigration Debate in the Age of Trump: National Outlook & Local Impact

Like most immigrant and migrant communities in cities across the United States, the St. Louis region confronts a critical moment that raises important questions about law enforcement, humanity, community, and contestation. UMSL’s Public Policy Administration Program, Community Innovation and Action Center (CIAC), and Creating Whole Communities invites Professor Stephen Legomsky, John S. Lehmann University Professor Emeritus at the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, to deliver a public talk on “The Immigration Debate in the Age of Trump: National Outlook & Local Impact,” which will provide a national overview of immigration enforcement. Following Professor Legomsky’s talk, a panel of local activists and immigrant allies will provide their reactions and insights on how the U.S.’s zero-tolerance immigration policy agenda has impacted St. Louis communities.

After the event, there will be a reception with hors d'oeuvres, courtesy of Creating Whole Communities, and beer from Earthbound Brewery.

This event is open to the public and free, courtesy of UMSL’s Public Policy Administration Program, CIAC, and Creating Whole Communities (a partnership of UMSL and MU Extension).

Registration is requested. Register here.

As the St. Louis region commemorates the fifth anniversary of the #FergusonUprisings, the outpouring of civic activism following the killing of Michael Brown Jr., key regional organizations are proud to present the St. Louis Racial Equity Summit on October 10-11, 2019, a platform for elevating, connecting, and activating the people, practices, and resources necessary to achieve Racial Equity.

There will be a welcome reception held on Thursday, October 10th from 5:30PM-7:30PM and then a full day of programming on Friday from 7:30AM-4:30PM.

first-ever “Build with Pride” initiative where, working together, we’ll build affordable housing to advance our mission of creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

The purpose of our “Build with Pride” initiative is to advocate and raise awareness around the need for affordable housing in our community. Half the renters in our region are spending half of their income on rent, leaving little to nothing left over for medical expenses, child care, food and even education.

When you partner with Habitat Saint Louis during our “Build with Pride” campaign, you’ll work alongside our homebuyers as well as individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community. We’re asking participants for a suggested $20 donation to participate in this build. Your donation helps offset the cost of construction and labor on our build sites. RSVP requested. Please see the link above for more information.

This summer, the Affordable Housing Trust Fund (AHTF) in the City of St. Louis was funded at the highest level in about a decade: $6.6 million!

That’s $6.6 million to help St. Louis area organizations build affordable homes, support tenant in the fight against negligent landlords, assist aging neighbors with home repair, and provide services for our unhoused neighbors. These are just a few types of projects the AHTF supports.

All the partners in the AHTF Coalition would like to invite you to join us in celebrating our victory and learning more about this important resource in our community.

At the event, we will:

  1. Learn about the AHTF and why it matters

  2. Hear how organizations can apply for this funding tool

  3. Share stories about why affordable housing matters

Our Coalition especially wants to hear from you at the event about why the AHTF and affordable housing matter. Your contributions help US make the case each year about why our city should increase funding for the AHTF.

Snacks will be provided.
