Legal Services of Eastern Missouri Fighting Vacancy, One Property at a Time

Attorney Peter Hoffman of Legal Services of Eastern Missouri is working to address one of St. Louis’ biggest neighborhood challenges: vacant and abandoned properties. Through the organization’s Neighborhood Advocacy Program, Hoffman and his team partner with neighborhood groups to help transform neglected properties into productive community assets.

While vacancy remains a major issue across the city, Hoffman sees progress through collaboration between residents, legal advocates, and community organizations. His team estimates they have helped return nearly 1,000 formerly vacant properties to productive use, replacing blighted structures with renovated homes, new construction, and opportunities for neighborhood reinvestment.

Hoffman emphasizes that addressing vacancy requires long-term commitment and strong partnerships. By supporting residents who are working to strengthen their communities, he believes St. Louis can break the cycle of abandonment and create a stronger future for its neighborhoods.
