Profile:
Formed in 2001, the St. Louis Regional Health Commission (RHC) is a collaborative effort of St. Louis City, St. Louis County, the state of Missouri, health providers, and community members to improve the health of uninsured and underinsured citizens in St. Louis City and County. The Commission is a 19-member appointed body of government, health sector, and community leadership with two 30-member peer-elected advisory boards of community leaders and healthcare providers.

The mission of the St. Louis Regional Health Commission is to:

  • Increase access to health care for people who are medically uninsured and underinsured.
  • Reduce health disparities among populations in the St. Louis City and County region.
  • Improve health outcomes among populations in the St. Louis City and County region, especially among those most at risk.

In 2012, the George Washington University School of Public Health & Health Services selected the St. Louis Regional Health Commission and the St. Louis safety net as a national model for improving access to care for the safety net population.

One of the core roles of the RHC is to ensure a financially sustainable healthcare system for all, regardless of ability to pay. In this role, the RHC is the fiscal manager for a $30 million annual demonstration which provides over 20 percent of all funding for all community health centers in St. Louis. This national model has prevented over 50,000 unnecessary emergency room visits in the St. Louis urban core each year.
